What this estimate does and does not include
- This estimate is for registering a car the first time after you buy it or bring it into California. On renewals the Vehicle License Fee is based on a depreciated value, so it falls each year.
- County and district fees ($1 to $19 each, plus a $10 county transportation fee in some counties) depend on where you live and are not included. Use the official DMV calculator with your VIN for the exact amount.
- The DMV has announced CPI increases effective January 1, 2027: the CHP fee rises to $35 and the Transportation Improvement Fee tiers rise to $35, $69, $138, $208 and $242. This page will be updated when they take effect.
- Late renewal penalties start at $10 (1–10 days late) plus 10% of the Vehicle License Fee, and grow the longer you wait.
California registration questions
How much is car registration in California?
For most cars it is the $76 registration fee, the $34 CHP fee, the Vehicle License Fee (0.65% of the car's value), the Transportation Improvement Fee ($33 to $231 depending on value) and small county fees. A $30,000 car pays roughly $437 in state fees before county fees and use tax.
Is California registration tax deductible?
Only the Vehicle License Fee part may be deductible as a personal property tax on Schedule A if you itemize, because it is based on value. The flat fees are not. Check with a tax professional.
