What this estimate does and does not include

  • Registration fees are from K.S.A. 8-143. Every registration and renewal also pays the $5 service fee (K.S.A. 8-145 as amended in 2026) and the $4 modernization surcharge (K.S.A. 75-5160). We found no separate charge for a standard license plate.
  • Counties may add a registration transaction fee of up to $5 where the county has more than one registration office, or up to $2.50 where it has one. Whether your county charges it isn't published in one place, so it shows as not available.
  • Vehicle property tax is paid to your county when you register and at each renewal. It depends on the car and where you live; enter the amount from the Department of Revenue's lookup, or it shows as not available.
  • Sales tax: 6.5% state plus local. A Kansas dealer collects its own location's rate; if the rate where you live is higher, you pay the difference to the county treasurer. In a private sale, you pay the tax to the county treasurer at the higher of the rate where the sale took place and your home rate, plus a 50-cent service fee. Dealer trade-ins are deducted; in a private trade, the value of a vehicle you trade to the seller is deducted. Selling your old car privately and using the money does not count as a trade-in.
  • No sales tax between immediate family members (parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren and their spouses) with an Affidavit of Relationship (TR-215), or on a genuine gift.
  • Moving to Kansas: your car needs a Motor Vehicle Examination (form MVE-1) at a Kansas inspection station before you title it; its fee isn't included. Kansas use tax may be due if the car hasn't met the first-use rules in Pub. KS-1526, so sales tax for new residents shows as not available.
  • Register within 60 days of buying to avoid a penalty. Trucks, motorcycles, trailers, specialty plates and plate transfers aren't covered by this calculator.
