What this estimate does and does not include
- The Governmental Services Tax (GST) uses the car's original MSRP, not what you paid. The DMV values the car at 35% of that MSRP and then applies the age schedule in NRS 371.060: 100% new, 95% at one year, 85% at two, then 10 points less each year down to 15% at nine years or more. The tax is 4% of the result, at least $16, rounded to the nearest dollar.
- Clark and Churchill counties add a supplemental GST of 1% of the same depreciated valuation.
- A first Nevada title (or change of ownership) is $20 plus an $8.25 title processing fee.
- License plates add a production fee set by regulation (NAC 482.295) and a $0.50 prison industry fee per plate. The production fee amount isn't published on the DMV's pages, so plate fees show as not available.
- Sales tax is charged only on sales by Nevada dealers, on the purchase price at the rate of the county where the sale takes place: 6.85% (Esmeralda, Eureka, Humboldt, Mineral) to 8.375% (Clark), from the Department of Taxation's rate sheets. Private party sales, family sales and gifts pay no sales tax. Out-of-state dealer purchases may owe use tax, which isn't covered here.
- Electric vehicles pay no extra fee in Nevada. Smog checks, where required, are paid at the test station and aren't included.
- Nevada has no grace period: late registration adds $6 a month on the registration fee and a 10% penalty on the governmental services taxes.

How much is car registration in Nevada?
$33 a year plus the Governmental Services Tax, which depends on the car's original MSRP and age. For a new car with a $30,000 MSRP in Clark County that tax is $525 ($420 plus $105 supplemental), so about $558 a year before plate fees.
How is the Nevada Governmental Services Tax calculated?
The DMV takes 35% of the car's original MSRP, reduces it by age (5% after the first year, then 10% a year, down to 15% of the starting value at nine years), and charges 4% of that, with a $16 minimum. Clark and Churchill counties add 1% more.
Do I pay sales tax on a private car sale in Nevada?
