New Mexico car registration fee calculator

How much does it cost to register a car in New Mexico? From July 1, 2026, registration is $33.75 to $70 a year by weight ($70 for most cars over 3,000 lbs), dropping after five years, plus $6 of state fees, so $76 a year for most cars. When you buy, add the $5 title fees and New Mexico's 4% motor vehicle excise tax on the price less any trade-in. The excise tax replaces sales tax, and there is no local add-on.

What this estimate does and does not include

  • Registration fees rose on July 1, 2026 (Laws 2026, chapter 4, SB 2, section 66-6-2): $33.75 up to 2,000 lbs, $48.75 for 2,001 to 3,000 lbs and $70 over 3,000 lbs, falling to $26.25, $38.75 and $56.25 after five years of registration. The MVD's Register Your Vehicle page still shows the older range of $27 to $62; we use the law and the MVD's fees manual revised in August 2026, which match each other.
  • Every passenger registration also pays a $1.50 tire recycling fee, a $2 additional registration fee, a 50-cent beautification fee and a $2 administrative fee (MVD fees manual). Two-year registrations are available; this calculator shows one year.
  • Title: a $3 transaction fee plus the $2 administrative fee. Apply within 30 days of buying the car or pay a $20 late transfer fee.
  • Motor vehicle excise tax: 4% of the price less any trade-in. On a private sale the MVD uses at least 80% of the N.A.D.A. average trade-in value if your price is lower. No excise tax on a genuine gift with a notarized Affidavit of Gift (MVD-10018), or for new residents who bought the car for personal use at least 30 days before moving to New Mexico. Tax paid to another state on the same car is credited. Applying for the title more than 90 days late adds a 50% penalty.
  • Electric and plug-in hybrid cars pay no extra fee in 2026. From January 1, 2027 they pay $70 and $35 a year, rising to $80 and $40 in 2028 and $90 and $45 from 2029 (SB 2, section 3).
  • Late renewal costs $10 if you're up to 30 days late and 75% of the registration fee (at least $10) after that. Renewing online, at a kiosk or by phone takes up to 5% off the base fee, less a $1.65 card fee; not shown here.
  • Bernalillo County cars need an emissions certificate (Air Care); its cost isn't included. Trucks, motorcycles and trailers use different fee schedules and aren't covered.
