Count full months since the expiration date. The $10 late fee starts more than 30 days after expiration. What this estimate does and does not include

  • Ohio changed several fees on January 1, 2026 (House Bill 96): registration rose $5 (passenger $31 to $36), the title fee went from $15 to $18 (or $23 where the county adopted it) and the deputy registrar fee from $5 to $8. Older pages still show the old amounts.
  • Permissive tax: counties, cities and townships each may levy $5 steps, up to $30 a year in total. The amount depends on your taxing district, so pick it yourself (your last renewal shows it). Our default of $20 is only an example.
  • Sales tax is charged at the rate of the county where you live, not where you buy. A trade-in lowers the taxed price only on a new vehicle from a new-car dealer; on a used vehicle the full price is taxed. If you bought out of state, sales tax paid there is credited.
  • New residents: title and register within 30 days. An out-of-state vehicle needs an $8 VIN inspection. No Ohio tax is due on a vehicle bought and used outside Ohio at least six months before you moved; otherwise tax is due, less tax paid to the other state.
  • Multi-year registration (up to 5 years): yearly fees and permissive tax are paid for each year; the deputy registrar fee is $8, $12, $16, $20 or $24 for 1 to 5 years.
  • Commercial trucks pay a license tax by declared gross weight ($45 to $1,340) plus a $35 application fee. Apportioned (IRP) vehicles, farm trucks and trailers are not covered. Electric motorcycles: our sources don't say whether the fuel-type fees apply to motorcycles, so they show as not available.
  • E-Check emissions testing is required in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit Counties. It is free at official stations. Ohio has no safety inspection and no yearly vehicle property tax.
  • Not included: plate transfer ($9), replacement plates, specialty and personalized plates.
