What this estimate does and does not include

  • The vehicle excise tax is Indiana's biggest yearly charge. It isn't a percentage: it comes from the BMV's table of 17 classes (by the manufacturer's original retail price) and the car's age (calendar year due minus model year). It falls every year, from $406 to $42 for a $30,000-$34,999 car.
  • The BMV and the Department of Revenue print the same excise amounts but label the top of Class 16 differently ($42,499 vs $42,999). A car with an original price from $42,500 to $42,999 could fall in either class; the calculator follows the BMV.
  • Motorcycles: the BMV publishes no motorcycle excise table, so the motorcycle excise tax shows as not available. Trucks: the excise for trucks and the commercial vehicle excise tax on heavier trucks aren't covered and show as not available.
  • Plug-in hybrids: the BMV fee chart has one hybrid line ($81) and no separate plug-in hybrid line; the calculator charges plug-in hybrids the hybrid fee, as our EV fee table does. The $242 and $81 amounts are from the January 2026 chart; we re-check them each year.
  • County and city excise surtax or wheel tax: only where the county or city has adopted one by ordinance, flat or a percentage. The BMV's list of rates wasn't readable, so tick the box and that line shows as not available. Lake and Porter counties require an emissions test every two years (newest four model years exempt); the test price isn't published by the BMV.
  • Sales tax is 7% for dealer and private sales. The dealer collects it; on a private sale you pay it at the BMV when you title. A trade-in is deducted only for a like-kind exchange.
  • Not included: speed title ($25 on top of the $15 title fee, $40 total), plate transfer ($9.50), personalized plates ($45), the out-of-state vehicle inspection and card fees.
