Utah car registration fee calculator

How much does it cost to register a car in Utah? Every passenger car pays the 2026 uniform age-based fee ($150 for model years 2024 to 2026, down to $10 for 2014 and older), a $2.50 driver education fee and a $1 uninsured motorist fee, plus a $10 corridor fee in 11 counties and a $2 or $3 air pollution control fee in five. A new title is $6, electric cars add $180 a year, and sales tax is charged on the price at your local rate. The base registration fee itself is indexed every January and the DMV publishes the 2026 amount only in its Fee Estimator, so it shows as not available.

What this estimate does and does not include

  • Not available: the 2026 registration fee. Utah Code 41-1a-1206 prints $44 plus an additional $7 for a passenger car, but the Tax Commission raises both by inflation every January 1 (rounded up to the nearest 25 cents), and the DMV publishes the current amount only through its online Fee Estimator, which was down for maintenance when we checked (October 17, 2026). The same applies to the hybrid fee ($21.75 base) and the plug-in hybrid fee ($56.50 base). We'll add the amounts once an official source prints them.
  • Uniform age-based fee (Utah Code 59-2-405): $150 for model years 2024 to 2026, $110 for 2021 to 2023, $80 for 2018 to 2020, $50 for 2015 to 2017 and $10 for 2014 and older. It replaces property tax on passenger cars and is due at the first registration and every renewal.
  • Electric cars pay the alternative fuel vehicle fee on top of registration: $180 a year in 2026, rising to $280 on January 1, 2027. Instead, owners can join UDOT's Road Usage Charge program and pay 1.25 cents a mile (1.5 cents from 2027), never more than the flat fee. Electric cars don't pay the air pollution control fee.
  • County fees: a $10 corridor preservation fee in Salt Lake, Davis, Utah, Weber, Summit, Wasatch, Iron, Box Elder, Washington, Tooele and Morgan counties, and an air pollution control fee of $3 in Salt Lake, Davis and Cache and $2 in Utah and Weber counties.
  • Sales tax is on the price you actually paid. A trade-in lowers it only when it's a vehicle traded for this vehicle in the same transaction; other trades are taxed at their value. There is no exemption for sales between family members. Dealer sales use the tax rate where the dealer is; other sales use the rate where you register the car. Pick the city, town or county from the list: rates are the Tax Commission's combined rates for October to December 2026 (6.35% to 10.05%). Special districts (for example MIDA, UIPA and HTRZ areas) are listed under their official names; if you're not sure which applies, pick "Not sure" and enter the rate from the Tax Commission's address lookup.
  • New residents have 60 days to transfer their title and registration. Not available: whether a new resident owes Utah sales or use tax on a car they already own; the DMV pages don't say, so that line shows as not available.
  • Not included: emissions inspection fees (set by the stations; required in Cache, Davis, Salt Lake, Utah and Weber counties for many cars), temporary permits ($6), six-month and 24-month registration periods, specialty plates, trucks, motorcycles and trailers.
