Your vehicle

North Carolina prices trucks by registered gross weight; a light pickup at 4,000 lbs pays the same $46.25 as a car.
$
The 3% Highway Use Tax is charged on this when the vehicle gets a North Carolina title. On a private sale the DMV uses the higher of the price paid and its schedule value. North Carolina has no sales tax on vehicles.
$
A vehicle traded in to the dealer reduces the Highway Use Tax base. A manufacturer rebate does not.
$
Credited against the Highway Use Tax (it can bring it down to $0, not below).
The fee follows the gross weight you register the truck for. Weights not listed here are not in the table we have.
Plug-in electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles pay an extra yearly fee. A hybrid that can't plug in pays nothing extra.
Wake, Durham and Orange add $17 a year and Randolph $1. Emissions testing applies in 19 counties.

What this estimate does and does not include

  • Fees are from the NCDMV fee schedule (MVR-94) effective July 1, 2024, when DMV fees rose 19.18% under the four-year inflation adjustment. Older pages still show $38.75 registration and a $56 title fee: those are out of date. The next adjustment is due in 2028.
  • Highway Use Tax: 3% of the price (minus a trade-in on a dealer sale), paid once when the vehicle is titled in North Carolina. New residents whose vehicle was titled in their name in another state for at least 90 days pay at most $250. Gifts between spouses, parents and children or stepparents and stepchildren are exempt (form MVR-613). Trucks registered at 30,000 lbs or more are capped at $2,000 as commercial vehicles. Leased vehicles are taxed on lease payments instead and are not covered.
  • Property tax (Tag & Tax Together): the NCDMV collects your county and city vehicle property tax with each registration renewal. The county sets the value and the rate, so we don't include it in the total. Enter the value and combined rate from your notice to see an estimate. New owners can defer it for about 60 days with a limited registration.
  • Some cities and towns add a municipal vehicle tax (up to $30 a year). There is no official statewide list, so it is not included: check your renewal notice.
  • Inspection: a safety inspection ($13.60) is needed every year before renewal; in 19 counties it is a safety + emissions inspection (up to $30; stations may charge less). A vehicle registered in North Carolina for the first time doesn't need one until its first renewal. We show the inspection on renewals only.
  • Trucks: registration follows the registered gross weight, from $46.25 at 4,000 lbs to $2,205 at 80,000 lbs. Weights between the steps we list are not in our table, so they show as not available. Electric motorcycles: the fee schedule doesn't say whether the electric vehicle fee applies, so it shows as not available.
  • Not included: plate transfer ($25.50), personalized plates, card payment fees, notary fees and dealer documentation fees. From October 1, 2026 the NCDMV no longer mails registration cards and stickers.

How much does it cost to register a truck in North Carolina?

It depends on the registered gross weight: $46.25 at 4,000 lbs, $70 at 5,000, $96 at 7,000, $160 at 10,000 and up to $2,205 at 80,000 lbs a year. A new title adds $66.75 and the 3% Highway Use Tax.

How much is motorcycle registration in North Carolina?

$29.50 a year, plus the $66.75 title and 3% Highway Use Tax when it is first titled in North Carolina. Motorcycles need a safety inspection but not an emissions test.

What is the late fee for an expired registration in North Carolina?

$15 if less than a month late, $20 if one to two months late, and $25 after two months. Unpaid property tax also earns interest.

Do new residents pay the Highway Use Tax in North Carolina?

Yes, when they title the vehicle in North Carolina, but it is capped at $250 if the vehicle was titled in their name in another state for at least 90 days. Under 90 days, the 3% tax is reduced by any sales tax paid to the other state.
