The short answer
For most passenger cars in 2026, California charges a $76 registration fee, a $34 CHP fee, a Vehicle License Fee of 0.65% of the car's value, a Transportation Improvement Fee of $33 to $231 depending on value, and a few small county fees. If you bought the car from a private seller or out of state, you also pay use tax when you register it.
Each fee, line by line
| Fee | 2026 amount | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Registration fee | $76 | Flat. Includes the $3 Alternative Fuel/Technology Fee. |
| CHP fee | $34 | Flat. Funds the California Highway Patrol. |
| Vehicle License Fee (VLF) | 0.65% of value | The car's purchase price or value. Falls as the car ages. |
| Transportation Improvement Fee (TIF) | $33 – $231 | The car's value, in five steps (table below). |
| Road Improvement Fee | $121 | Only zero-emission vehicles, model year 2020 and later. |
| County and district fees | Varies | Where you live. Not published as one statewide figure. |
Vehicle License Fee
The VLF is 0.65% of the vehicle's purchase price or value. The DMV lowers the value it uses over the first 11 renewal years, or until the car is sold, so the VLF shrinks each year. That is why a renewal on an older car costs much less than registering a newer one.
Transportation Improvement Fee
| Vehicle value | TIF in 2026 |
|---|---|
| $0 – $4,999 | $33 |
| $5,000 – $24,999 | $66 |
| $25,000 – $34,999 | $132 |
| $35,000 – $59,999 | $198 |
| $60,000 and higher | $231 |
The TIF applies to original registrations, transfers and renewals.
Road Improvement Fee for electric cars
Zero-emission vehicles from model year 2020 onward pay a $121 Road Improvement Fee, because they don't pay gas tax. The DMV does not charge it on the first registration of a new zero-emission vehicle bought from a licensed California dealer; it starts with the renewals.
County and district fees
Counties and air districts add small fees for programs such as air quality and abandoned-vehicle removal. They depend on your address, so the only reliable way to get them is the DMV's own fee calculator with your vehicle's details.
Use tax: the biggest line for many buyers
If you buy from a California dealer, you pay sales tax at the dealership. If you buy from a private seller, you usually pay use tax to the DMV when you register the car. The rate is the sales tax rate at the address where you register it.
- The statewide base rate is 7.25%. Cities and districts add to it.
- On CDTFA's rate list effective October 1, 2026, some Los Angeles County cities are much higher: Lancaster and Palmdale are at 11.75%.
- A trade-in does not reduce the taxable price for use tax. CDTFA's own example taxes a $5,000 car on the full $5,000, even with a $3,000 trade.
- Buying from a parent, grandparent, child, grandchild or spouse/registered domestic partner is exempt (siblings only if both were minors). Stepparents and ex-spouses generally don't qualify.
- A car bought out of state and brought into California within 12 months is presumed bought for use here, so use tax usually applies.
Worked example: a $30,000 car bought from a private seller
Registering it for the first time, at the 7.25% base rate:
| Registration fee | $76.00 |
| CHP fee | $34.00 |
| Vehicle License Fee (0.65% × $30,000) | $195.00 |
| Transportation Improvement Fee ($25,000–$34,999 tier) | $132.00 |
| Use tax (7.25% × $30,000) | $2,175.00 |
| Total before county fees | $2,612.00 |
In Lancaster, at 11.75%, the use tax alone would be $3,525.00. County and district fees are extra.
Late renewal penalties
Penalties stack three parts: a flat registration penalty, a percentage of your VLF, and a CHP late fee. For a renewal:
| How late | Registration penalty | VLF penalty | CHP late fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 – 10 days | $10 | 10% of VLF | $10 |
| 11 – 30 days | $15 | 20% of VLF | $15 |
| 31 days – 1 year | $30 | 60% of VLF | $30 |
| Over 1 year – 2 years | $50 | 80% of VLF | $50 |
| Over 2 years | $100 | 160% of VLF | $100 |
So a renewal paid 5 days late adds $20 plus 10% of the VLF. A first registration in California that is late (for example, a car brought in from another state) uses a different scale: up to one year late is $30 + 40% of VLF + $30 CHP, then the same $50 and $100 steps as above. What changes on January 1, 2027
The DMV announced inflation increases on September 17, 2026. From January 1, 2027, the CHP fee rises to $35, the Road Improvement Fee to $127, and the TIF tiers to $35, $69, $138, $208 and $242. The notice also raises the base registration fee; we'll update this page with the new total once the DMV publishes it on its fee page.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my California registration so much higher than my friend's?
Two of the fees, the VLF and the TIF, depend on your car's value, and the VLF also depends on its age. A newer, more expensive car pays more. County fees also differ by address.
Is any of it tax deductible?
The Vehicle License Fee is based on value, so it may count as a personal property tax if you itemize deductions. The flat fees generally don't. Check with a tax professional.
How do I get my exact amount?
Use the DMV's fee calculator with your vehicle's details, or your renewal notice. Our California calculator gives an itemized estimate of the state fees and use tax.
