What this estimate does and does not include

  • The motor vehicle tax replaces property tax on vehicles and is paid at registration every year. It comes from a value-when-new table ($25 under $4,000 up to $1,900 at $100,000 and over; $500 for $30,000-$31,999) times an age fraction: 1.00 in year 1, then 0.90, 0.80, 0.70, 0.60, 0.51, 0.42, 0.33, 0.24, 0.15 (years 10-11), 0.07 (years 12-13) and 0 from year 14.
  • Motor vehicle fee: $5 under $20,000 value when new, $20 from $20,000, $30 from $40,000 (motorcycles $10), at 100% in years 1-5, 70% in years 6-10 and 35% from year 11.
  • Sales tax is collected by the county treasurer at registration, not by the dealer: 5.5% state plus your local rate, on the price less trade-in and rebates. Enter your local rate to include it; blank shows as not available. Paid more than 30 days after purchase adds interest and a $5 penalty.
  • Motorcycles: the motorcycle motor vehicle tax base wasn't confirmed, so it shows as not available. Trucks: the commercial registration fee is by gross weight up to 7 tons here; the motor vehicle tax and fee for trucks show as not available.
  • City wheel taxes ($10 to $370 a year by city) are collected with registration in some cities; Omaha's and Lincoln's amounts weren't confirmed on an official page, so they aren't included.
  • Not included: plate transfer (fee not published), duplicate title ($14). No late renewal penalty appears in the registration statutes; driving unregistered is a Class III misdemeanor.
