What this estimate does and does not include

  • Two charges: the municipal permit fee, paid to your town or city first, and the state registration fee by weight. Permit fee = maker's list price (rounded to the nearest $100) x 18 mills for the current model year, then 15, 12, 9, 6 and 3 mills, rounded to the dollar, $5 minimum.
  • Most DMV fees went up on January 1, 2026 (HB2): title $25 -> $35, state registration $31.20 / $43.20 / $55.20 -> $42 / $48 / $66, motorcycles $15 -> $30. Older pages show the old amounts.
  • Registrations run to the owner's birth month, so a first registration is prorated (5 to 16 months). The calculator shows a full 12 months.
  • No sales or use tax on vehicle purchases. Model years 1999 and older don't need a title (heavy trucks over 18,000 lbs always do).
  • Not included: optional town fees (waste reclamation $3, transportation improvement fee up to $5, only where the town adopted them), registration transfer ($10), vanity plates ($60 a year). The mandatory inspection program was repealed on January 31, 2026, so there is no inspection fee.
  • Late renewal: no flat late fee is published; a lapsed registration pays back fees for the missed periods. Title paperwork more than 20 days late costs a penalty equal to the title fee ($35).
