What this estimate does and does not include

  • County fees: the $14 state title fee has a county title admin fee on top ($0 to $18.75), and each registration has a county registration admin fee ($3 to $14). The calculator has the amounts ITD publishes for the counties listed; for others they show as not available.
  • Ada County Highway District fee: Ada County charges a local registration fee for vehicles under 8,000 lbs, but its amounts weren't read on an official ACHD or Ada County page, so it shows as not available and isn't in the total. A November 3, 2026 ballot measure would extend it to 2046.
  • Registration by age (Idaho Code 49-402): $69 for 1-2 years old, $57 for 3-6 years, $45 for 7 years and older; pickups and trucks up to 8,000 lbs pay the same. Trucks over 8,000 lbs aren't covered. A 2-year registration is optional at double the yearly fee.
  • Sales tax is 6% statewide with no local add-on, the same for private sales. A dealer trade-in stated separately on the invoice isn't taxed; dealer documentation fees are. Idaho gives credit for sales tax paid to another state; new residents who owned the vehicle for more than about 90 days before moving get relief.
  • No late renewal penalty was found in Idaho Code 49-402 or on ITD pages. A title filed more than 30 days after the sale costs a $20 penalty. Idaho has no vehicle property tax and no emissions test fee at registration.
  • Not included: plate transfer (fee not confirmed), duplicate title ($14), release of liability ($3.50).
