California registration late fee calculator

Enter the Vehicle License Fee from your renewal notice and how many days late you are. California adds a percentage of the VLF plus a registration late fee and a CHP late fee, and all three grow the longer you wait. Paying 20 days late on a $195 VLF costs $69 in penalties.

  • Registration late fee11 to 30 days late$15.00
  • CHP late fee11 to 30 days late$15.00
Total late fees$69.00
  • California has no grace period: penalties start the day after the expiration date.
  • If the car hasn't been driven, towed, stored or parked on public roads, you can still file Planned Non-Operation (allowed up to 90 days after expiry), but these penalties still apply.

The calculator uses the DMV's penalty table below. Your renewal notice or the DMV's online renewal shows the exact amount, which can include county fees we don't model.

How the DMV works it out

For a car already registered in California, a late renewal adds three parts:

Days late% of VLF and weight feeRegistration late feeCHP late fee
1 – 1010%$10$10
11 – 3020%$15$15
31 days – 1 year60%$30$30
Over 1 year – 2 years80%$50$50
Over 2 years160%$100$100

For a car never registered in California (a new resident's car or a new car), the DMV lists a percentage of the VLF and weight fee only: 40% up to one year late, 80% from one to two years and 160% after two years. Its penalties page doesn't list registration or CHP late fees for that case, so the calculator shows them as not available.

Finding your VLF

The Vehicle License Fee is a line on your renewal notice. It is 0.65% of the value the DMV uses for your car, so a car valued at $30,000 has a $195 VLF. The value goes down over the first 11 renewal years, so an older car's VLF, and its late penalty, is smaller. Most passenger cars have no weight fee.

Examples with a $195 VLF

PaidPenalties
5 days late$19.50 + $10 + $10 = $39.50
20 days late$39.00 + $15 + $15 = $69.00
3 months late$117.00 + $30 + $30 = $177.00
18 months late$156.00 + $50 + $50 = $256.00
3 years late$312.00 + $100 + $100 = $512.00

These are added to the normal renewal fees. For what happens beyond the fees, such as towing, see what happens if you don't register your car in California, and for the 90-day myth see California's 90-day grace period.

Questions

How much is the California registration late fee for one day late?

10% of your VLF and any weight fee, plus a $10 registration late fee and a $10 CHP late fee. With a $195 VLF that is $39.50.

Does Planned Non-Operation stop the late fees?

No. You can file Planned Non-Operation up to 90 days after expiry if the car wasn't driven, towed, stored or parked on public roads, but the late penalties still apply.

Can the DMV waive late fees?

The DMV's penalties page doesn't describe a waiver. The amounts on it apply by how many days late the payment is.
