Official sources only
Every fee on this site comes from a state DMV, revenue department or county tax office publication. Each state page links to those sources and shows the date we last checked them.
We never guess
If we cannot confirm a fee from an official source, the calculator shows it as not available and leaves it out of the total, instead of filling in a number we're not sure about.
How often we update
Most states change vehicle fees at most once a year, often on January 1 or July 1. We re-check every state at least once a year and whenever a state announces a change.
What estimates can miss
- City and county add-on fees and local taxes that vary by address.
- Trucks, motorcycles, trailers, RVs and commercial vehicles.
- Penalties, specialty plates, inspections and dealer document fees.
- Exemptions for military members, disabled veterans and others.
Rounding
We calculate to the cent and round each line to the nearest cent. Some agencies round differently (for example to whole dollars), so your bill can differ by a few cents.
