What this estimate does and does not include

  • New cars (never titled) must pay a four-year registration up front. The calculator does that for new passenger cars; motorcycles pay the listed $65 once (the four-year rule on the MVC page covers passenger cars only).
  • ZEV fee: $250 from July 1, 2024, plus $10 a year for four years, so $270 for July 2026 to June 2027, $280 the next year and $290 from July 2028 (the cap). A new electric car pays four years up front: $270 + $280 + $290 + $290 = $1,130, following the MVC's method of adding up the four years. Renewals here show the $290 cap, which is what this car pays at its first renewal; a renewal before July 2027 is $270.
  • Plug-in hybrids: the MVC schedule has no plug-in hybrid line, and the ZEV fee applies only to vehicles certified as zero-emission, so it shows as not available. Conventional hybrids pay the normal weight-based fee.
  • Non-commercial trucks (pickups, vans and SUVs on truck plates) pay by gross weight, but the MVC doesn't publish the table, so the truck registration shows as not available.
  • Sales tax is 6.625% statewide, the same for electric cars since July 1, 2025. A trade-in lowers the taxed price only when you trade it to a dealer in the same transaction. Private buyers pay the tax when they title the car. Gifts are exempt when 'gift' is written on the title.
  • Luxury and Fuel-Inefficient Surcharge: a one-time 0.4% of the price on new cars priced $45,000 or more or rated under 19 MPG.
  • Not included: the inspection (new cars get a five-year decal; the MVC lists no price for private stations), dealer documentation fees, per-tire and lemon-law charges on dealer invoices (no official amount), and any late renewal fee (the MVC lists none). Seniors 65+ and people with a disability pay $7 less a year. No separate fee for standard plates is listed, so none is added.
