Oregon car registration fee calculator

How much does it cost to register a car in Oregon? Registration is for two years and depends on fuel economy: $126 (0-19 MPG), $136 (20-39 MPG), $216 (40+ MPG) or $376 (electric), or $86 if you enroll a 40+ MPG or electric car in OReGO. A brand-new car gets four years, so it pays double. Multnomah County adds $112, and Washington and Clackamas Counties $60, for two years. The title is $101 to $192, new plates are $26, and Oregon has no sales tax: new vehicles from a dealer carry a 0.5% privilege or use tax. Trucks over 10,000 lbs pay a yearly fee by weight, and motorcycles pay $88 for two years.

Your vehicle

A truck operated at 10,000 lbs or less (with its load) gets the same 2-year registration as a passenger car. Above 10,000 lbs it pays a yearly fee by registration weight.
$
Only used for the 0.5% vehicle privilege or use tax on new or nearly new vehicles bought from a dealer. Oregon has no sales tax.
$
Sales, use or excise tax on the vehicle itself that the out-of-state dealer charged. It is credited against the Oregon use tax.
Registration weight is the empty weight of the truck and anything it tows (except light trailers of 8,000 lbs or less, campers and travel trailers) plus the heaviest load it will carry.
The DMV uses the manufacturer's combined MPG for your VIN (fueleconomy.gov). It sets the title fee and, for passenger registration, the registration fee.
Only these three counties add a registration fee. If you live in one of them but the vehicle stays in another county, pick 'Any other Oregon county'.
Most vehicles in the Portland and Medford areas must pass a DEQ test before registering; newer vehicles are exempt. The fee is paid to DEQ only if the vehicle passes.

What this estimate does and does not include

  • Registration is valid for two years. A brand-new passenger vehicle with a manufacturer's certificate of origin gets a four-year first registration, so the DMV doubles the registration and county fees. The DMV's other-vehicle-types sheet (June 2026) says the same doubling applies to brand-new motorcycles and mopeds, although ORS 803.415(10) lists four-year registration only for new passenger vehicles and trailers. We follow the DMV sheet, because that is what the DMV charges, and have flagged the difference to be re-checked.
  • Trucks: a truck operated at 10,000 lbs or less with its load (most pickups) gets the same 2-year registration as a passenger car, by MPG. Above 10,000 lbs a truck must declare a registration weight and pays the one-year fee from the DMV's heavy vehicle fee schedule (form 735-6013): $528 for 10,001-12,000 lbs up to $1,031 for 24,001-26,000 lbs, plus truck plates. Trucks over 26,000 lbs usually pay Oregon's weight-mile tax through the Commerce and Compliance Division, so their registration shows as not available. Shorter (quarterly) registration for trucks is not covered.
  • County fees: Multnomah County $112 (motorcycles $78), Washington County $60 (motorcycles $34) and Clackamas County $60 (motorcycles $30) for two years; trucks registered by weight pay $14 a quarter in Multnomah and $7.50 a quarter in Washington or Clackamas. No other county fee is listed by the DMV.
  • The 40+ MPG and electric fees went up $30 a year on December 31, 2025. The ODOT OReGO page still shows the older two-year amounts ($156 and $316) in its table; the DMV fee page shows the current $216 and $376, which we use. From July 1, 2027, drivers of used electric vehicles will choose between a flat fee and paying by the mile when they renew; that change is not in this calculator yet.
  • Oregon has no sales tax. A vehicle bought from a dealer with 7,500 miles or less, 26,000 lbs GVWR or less and never registered in Oregon is subject to a 0.5% tax on the retail price: the vehicle privilege tax, which an Oregon dealer owes and may pass on to you, or the vehicle use tax, which you pay to the Department of Revenue within 30 days when you buy from an out-of-state dealer (less any vehicle tax paid to another state). Trade-ins and down payments don't reduce the price. Private sales and new residents' own vehicles are not taxed.
  • Title fees for passenger vehicles and trucks up to 26,000 lbs GVWR depend on MPG ($101, $106, $116, or $192 electric); motorcycles and mopeds pay $101, or $192 if electric; heavy vehicles $90. Apply for the title within 30 days of buying an Oregon-titled vehicle, or pay a $25 late fee (31-60 days) or $50 (after 60 days). Vehicles with an out-of-state title need a $9 VIN inspection.
  • Not covered: trailers, motor homes, campers, buses, special and custom plates, plate transfers ($30) and replacement plates. DEQ test fees are paid to DEQ, not the DMV, and only when the vehicle passes.

Oregon registration questions

How much is car registration in Oregon?

For two years: $126 for 0-19 MPG, $136 for 20-39 MPG, $216 for 40 MPG or more and $376 for an electric car, or $86 if a 40+ MPG or electric car is enrolled in OReGO. Multnomah County adds $112 and Washington and Clackamas Counties add $60. A brand-new car gets four years and pays double.

How much does it cost to register a truck in Oregon?

A truck operated at 10,000 lbs or less with its load pays the same 2-year fee as a car, by MPG. Heavier trucks pay a yearly fee by registration weight, from $528 (10,001-12,000 lbs) to $1,031 (24,001-26,000 lbs), plus $26 truck plates and county fees in Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas Counties. Trucks over 26,000 lbs usually pay the weight-mile tax instead.

How much is motorcycle registration in Oregon?

$88 for two years, plus $78 in Multnomah County, $34 in Washington County or $30 in Clackamas County. A new plate is $13 and the title is $101 ($192 if electric).

Does Oregon charge sales tax on cars?

No. But a new or nearly new vehicle (7,500 miles or less) bought from a dealer carries a 0.5% tax on the price: the vehicle privilege tax at an Oregon dealer, which the dealer may pass on to you, or the vehicle use tax if you buy from an out-of-state dealer. On a $30,000 car that's $150.

What is OReGO and does it lower my registration fee?

OReGO is Oregon's road usage charge program: you pay for the miles you drive and get a credit for the fuel tax you pay at the pump. If your passenger vehicle is electric or rated 40 MPG or more and you enroll, the two-year registration is $86 instead of $216 or $376.

How much is the late title transfer fee in Oregon?

If you buy an Oregon-titled vehicle, apply for the title within 30 days of the sale. After that the DMV adds $25 (31 to 60 days) or $50 (more than 60 days).
