What this estimate does and does not include

  • Registration includes the $2 a year Clean Air Fund fee ($89 + $2 = $91); electric vehicles don't pay it. The motorcycle amounts ($58 / $116) are the $56 statutory base plus the $2 fee, worked out from the DMV's method; the 2-year motorcycle figure is double the yearly fee.
  • EV infrastructure fee: $89 a year for all-electric vehicles, $44.50 for plug-in hybrids, collected with the registration. It is repealed on January 1, 2027 when a mileage-based fee takes over; we'll update the calculator then.
  • Purchase and use tax is 6% of the greater of the purchase price or the J.D. Power clean trade-in value, less your trade-in. Enter the J.D. Power value if it's higher than the price.
  • Pickups and trucks up to 6,099 lbs pay the car rate; heavier trucks pay by weight (not covered).
  • Not included: inspection (price set by the station), late renewal (no fee published). Title applied for more than 10 days late costs a penalty equal to the title fee ($42).
