What this estimate does and does not include
- Registration amounts are Service Oklahoma's published fees. The statute (47 O.S. § 1132) sets the base at $85, $75, $55, $35 and $15; the published amounts include add-on fees from other sections (for example $3 under § 1132.1 and $1 under § 1132.4). We use the amounts Service Oklahoma charges. The year counts from the car's first registration in any state, and the registration fee is in lieu of all other taxes, so there is no yearly property tax on a car.
- Buying a car: $11 title, $17 transfer fee ($15 under § 1132(E) plus add-ons) and a $1.50 insurance fee. Pre-register within two business days of the sale, get the plate on within ten days and fully register within two months. After two months the penalty is $1 a day, up to $100. The excise tax is due within 30 days, then $1 a day up to the amount of the tax.
- Motor vehicle excise tax (68 O.S. § 2103): 3.25% of the value of a new car; for a used car, $20 on the first $1,500 and 3.25% of the rest, rounded to the nearest dollar. From July 1, 2026 the value is the actual sales price before any trade-in (68 O.S. § 2104 and Service Oklahoma's tax estimator).
- Sales tax: cars that pay the excise tax also pay 1.25% sales tax on the price less any trade-in (68 O.S. § 1355). Cities and counties can't add sales tax on cars. Not available: whether a private seller's sale is charged the 1.25%. The law taxes sales by vendors, and Service Oklahoma's estimator doesn't separate dealer and private sales, so we leave it out of private-sale totals.
- No excise tax on a gift between spouses or between a parent and child (Form 794, Family Affidavit; siblings and grandparents don't qualify), on an inheritance, or for a new resident whose car was registered in their name in their former state at least 60 days before it had to be registered here (68 O.S. § 2105). If a new resident doesn't qualify, the excise tax depends on the car's value, which we don't estimate.
- Electric cars pay $110 a year on top of registration ($158 at 6,000 to 10,000 lbs gross) and plug-in hybrids $82 ($118) under the DRIVE Act (68 O.S. § 6511). The statutes also still list a $100 / $30 Motor Fuels Tax Fee for electric and plug-in hybrid cars (47 O.S. § 1132.7). Service Oklahoma doesn't publish whether it charges both, so that fee shows as not available.
- Not included: the waste tire fee ("varies by vehicle", per tire), the $4 VIN inspection fee when an out-of-state car needs one, lien filing, specialty plates, and licensed operator mail or service charges. Trucks, motorcycles and trailers have their own fees and aren't covered.
- Service Oklahoma – Fees & Exemptions (standard registration $96 / $86 / $66 / $46 / $26 by year of registration; title $11, transfer fee $17, insurance fee $1.50, VIN inspection $4, tire tax varies; excise exemptions: family transfer with Form 794, dropping a name, trusts, divorce) · checked October 17, 2026

$96 a year for the first through fourth year of registration, $86 for years 5 to 8, $66 for 9 to 12, $46 for 13 to 16 and $26 from the 17th year (Service Oklahoma). Electric cars add $110 a year and plug-in hybrids $82.
How much is tax on a car in Oklahoma?
Two taxes: the motor vehicle excise tax, 3.25% of the price of a new car (a used car pays $20 on the first $1,500 and 3.25% of the rest), and 1.25% sales tax on the price less any trade-in. On a new $30,000 car that's $975 excise plus $375 sales tax. There is no city or county sales tax on cars.
Does a trade-in lower the tax in Oklahoma?
Only the 1.25% sales tax. Since July 1, 2026, the 3.25% excise tax is on the actual sales price before any trade-in credit.
How long do I have to register a car in Oklahoma after buying it?
Pre-register within two business days, put the plate on within ten days, and fully register within two months of the sale. After two months the penalty is $1 a day, up to $100.
Do I pay excise tax when I move to Oklahoma?
Not if the car was registered in your name in your former state for at least 60 days before it had to be registered in Oklahoma (68 O.S. § 2105). You still pay registration, the $11 title fee and the $1.50 insurance fee.
