What this estimate does and does not include

  • Registration (NDCC 39-04-19) is by weight and by the year the vehicle was first registered: four columns (2022 or later, 2019-2021, 2016-2018, 2015 or earlier). The DOT fee schedules we cite are the MVD-2 forms dated for 2027; their amounts are the same as the statute in force now.

  • The 5% motor vehicle excise tax replaces sales tax: on the purchase price less trade-in; manufacturer rebates aren't deducted.
  • Electric vehicles pay $120 a year and plug-in hybrids $50, at registration and every renewal; hybrids nothing extra.
  • No late renewal penalty is listed. Late excise payments owe a penalty (5% or $5, plus 1% a month); a late title fee wasn't confirmed. Trucks over 20,000 lbs aren't covered. Plate transfer is $5.
