What this estimate does and does not include

  • Personal property tax isn't in the total. Your county assesses the vehicle every year (20% of market value x local millage) and bills the tax separately, but the DFA needs proof of assessment and payment before you can register or renew.
  • Used vehicles: sales tax depends on the total price before any trade-in. Under $4,000: no tax. $4,000 to $9,999: 3.5%. $10,000 or more: 6.5%. A trade-in, or a car you sell privately within 60 days before or after the purchase (your name must be on both titles), lowers the taxed price.
  • Local sales tax: city and county taxes apply only to the first $2,500 of the price, so at most $25 per 1% of local rate. The DFA's local rate chart wasn't available to us, so type your rate; blank shows it as not available.
  • The 'SB49' used-car tiers some websites show ($10,000 exempt, $15,000 at 3.5%) never became law: the bill died in interim study in 2025.
  • Not included: special-license-unit plate postage (+$1), heavier trucks and trailers. Register within 60 days of buying; late registration costs $3 per 10 days, up to the yearly fee, and unpaid tax a 10% penalty.
