What this estimate does and does not include
- The Vehicle License Tax (VLT) is based on the manufacturer's base retail price, not what you paid or the car's current value: 60% of it in the first year, 16.25% less each year after, at $2.80 per $100 in the first year and $2.89 after, with a $10 minimum. Small rounding differences from your MVD bill are possible.
- Electric and other alternative fuel vehicles first registered in Arizona in 2023 or later pay the normal VLT. The reduced VLT (1% of the base price before 2022, 20% in 2022, $4 per $100, $5 minimum) only applies to vehicles first registered before 2023. Electric vehicles don't pay the $1.50 air quality fee.
- The $32 Public Safety Fee was repealed on July 1, 2021, and the motorcycle registration fee is $9. Older calculators still show the old amounts.
- Commercial trucks pay a $4 commercial registration fee plus a gross weight fee by declared weight ($7.50 up to 8,000 lbs, $234 at 24,001-26,000 lbs, $918 at 75,001-80,000 lbs). Over 80,000 lbs is not in our table. Farm plates (half the weight fee) are not covered.
- Sales tax: an Arizona dealer collects 5.6% state transaction privilege tax plus county and city tax, on the price less any trade-in. A private sale between individuals in Arizona is not taxed. A vehicle bought from an out-of-state dealer owes Arizona use tax, less sales tax paid to the other state. Use tax for new residents bringing a vehicle they already own is not covered.
- Late renewal: $8 for the first month and $4 for each month after, up to $100. Emissions tests (Phoenix and Tucson areas) cost $12.25 to $23.75 at the station; the common OBD test is $16.15.
- Two-year and five-year registrations exist for vehicles that don't need an emissions test during the term; they are not modelled here. Specialty and personalized plates are not covered.
