What this estimate does and does not include

  • Annual registration amounts are the totals published by the Seminole County Tax Collector. They include state statutory fees on top of FLHSMV's base tax ($14.50, $22.50 or $32.50). Other counties may add small service fees.
  • If you transfer an existing Florida plate, a small plate transfer fee applies instead of the $225 and $28. It is not included here (not available).
  • Trucks, motorcycles and RVs use different fee classes and are not covered by this calculator.
  • Florida registration usually runs to your birthday, so the first year can be shorter or longer than 12 months and the amount is prorated.

Florida registration questions

Why is Florida registration so expensive the first time?

Because of the $225 initial registration fee charged when a car gets a Florida plate for the first time, plus the $28 plate fee. Renewals afterwards cost only about $28 to $46 a year for most cars.

Do I pay the $225 fee if I transfer my plate?

No. The $225 initial registration fee does not apply when you transfer a Florida plate from a car you already owned.
