Mississippi car registration fee calculator

How much does it cost to register a car in Mississippi? The state charges add up to $1,538 on a new $30,000 car from a dealer: $9 title, $14 registration, $15 privilege tax and $1,500 sales tax (5%). On top of that comes the ad valorem tax, which is usually the biggest part of a Mississippi tag bill: 30% of the MSRP, less the 5% Legislative Tag Credit, times your local millage. Enter your millage to include it (at 100 mills a new $30,000 car pays $855).

What this estimate does and does not include

  • There is no single honest Mississippi total without your local millage: county, city and school districts set it, and the same car can cost twice as much to tag across a county line (State Auditor, January 2026). Leave the millage blank and the ad valorem tax shows as not available.
  • Ad valorem: assessed value is 30% of the MSRP, depreciated over 10 years. The DOR's depreciation percentages aren't published online, so the calculator works out the tax only for a car in its first year; for older cars and renewals it shows as not available. The Legislative Tag Credit is applied at the published 5% of assessed value; the State Auditor says the credit actually applied is recalculated each year and isn't published.
  • Electric and hybrid taxes: the statutes set $150 and $75 a year and raise them by the CPI every July 1 since 2021. The amount billed today is higher, but the current figure isn't published, so the calculator shows the $150 / $75 base and labels it. Plug-in hybrids pay the hybrid tax. Electric motorcycle tax isn't covered (not available).
  • Sales tax is 5% (no local tax). Dealer sales: price after discounts and trade-in; manufacturer rebates are taxable. Private sales are taxed on the DOR's scheduled true value, not the price, which isn't published, so that line shows as not available. There is no credit for tax paid to another state. Trucks over 10,000 lbs pay 3% and aren't covered here.
  • Late renewal: 5% from the 16th day of the month after expiry, +5% per 30 days, up to 25% (and the tag credit is lost). New residents have 30 days; late adds a $250 penalty. No late title penalty was found.
  • Not included: substitute tag and decal ($10), decal only ($2.50). There is no emissions test in Mississippi.

Mississippi registration questions

How much is a car tag in Mississippi?

$12.75 registration and $15 privilege tax a year, plus the ad valorem tax, which depends on the car's MSRP, its age and your local millage. The ad valorem tax is usually the largest part.

How much are the fees on a new $30,000 car in Mississippi?

$1,538 in state charges: $1,500 sales tax (5%), $9 title, $14 registration and $15 privilege tax. Ad valorem tax is extra: $8,550 assessed (after the 5% tag credit) times your millage, for example $855 at 100 mills.

How is Mississippi ad valorem tax on a car calculated?

Assessed value = 30% of the MSRP, reduced by depreciation each year; less the Legislative Tag Credit; times your local millage. The depreciation schedule isn't published online.

Do electric cars pay extra in Mississippi?

Yes. The law sets $150 a year for electric cars and $75 for hybrids, raised by the CPI each July 1, so the amount billed is somewhat higher.

Does Mississippi give credit for sales tax paid in another state?

No. The DOR says there is no credit for sales tax paid to another state.
