A Nevada title costs $28.25, and you have 30 days to register. Private, family and gift sales pay no sales tax at all. Every buyer pays the Governmental Services Tax (GST), a yearly tax on the car's original sticker price. A new $30,000 car from a Clark County dealer comes to $3,098.75.

How much does it cost to transfer a car title in Nevada?

The title is the document that proves who owns the car. In Nevada a change of ownership costs $28.25: a $20 title fee plus an $8.25 title processing fee. The processing fee is charged on every complete change of ownership, whether from a dealer, a private seller, a relative or a gift.

FeeAmount
Title after a sale or gift$28.25
Duplicate title, sent to a Nevada address$20
Duplicate title, sent out of state$35
Out-of-state title changed to Nevada, same owner$20
Registration, passenger car$33 a year
Moving your registration to another car$6

Two DMV figures. The DMV's title page lists $28.50 for a complete change of ownership. Its Registration and Title Guide and its fees page both say $28.25 and show how it adds up, so we use $28.25.

Liens: Nevada publishes no separate fee for recording a lien. It's part of the title charge.

Worked example: new $30,000 car from a Clark County dealer

  • Sales tax: 8.375% of $30,000 = $2,512.50
  • GST: 4% of $10,500 (35% of the $30,000 MSRP) = $420.00
  • Supplemental GST (Clark County): 1% of $10,500 = $105.00
  • Registration: $33.00
  • Title: $28.25

Total: $3,098.75.

The Nevada calculator below starts from the same $3,098.75. It doesn't include new license plate fees.

Compare: 2-year-old car, $30,000 MSRP, bought privately in Washoe County

  • Sales tax: none on a private sale = $0.00
  • GST: 4% of $8,925 (85% of the $10,500 valuation) = $357.00
  • Supplemental GST: none in Washoe = $0.00
  • Registration: $33.00
  • Title: $28.25

Total: $418.25. Almost all of the difference is the dealer sales tax.

Do you pay sales tax on a private car sale in Nevada?

No. The DMV says private party sales, family sales and gifts are not subject to sales tax. It doesn't matter who the seller is.

What is Nevada's Governmental Services Tax (GST)?

The GST is a yearly tax paid at registration, including your first one after buying.

The DMV's own example: a 2-year-old car with a $20,000 MSRP pays $238 GST, plus $60 supplemental GST in Clark or Churchill County.

How many days do you have to register a car in Nevada?

The DMV says you have 30 days from the date of the sale to register. A dealer's temporary placard also runs 30 days.

The law's penalty clock is shorter. State law adds a $6 penalty if a buyer hasn't registered within 10 days after the transfer. Register early to be safe.

Driving before you register: after a private sale you may drive for up to 3 days with the signed title or bill of sale and Nevada insurance. After that, a 30-day movement permit costs $1 online.

Late penalties

Nevada has no grace period. If you're late you pay:

No late fees are charged for time covered by a valid movement permit.

Family sales and gifts

There's no sales tax on a sale or gift between family members, so there's nothing to claim. The title still costs the full $28.25, and the GST and registration apply as usual.

Plates, registration and emissions

Registration is $33 a year for a passenger car.

Plates stay with the seller. The seller keeps them, turns them in or uses them on another car. The buyer gets new plates or moves their own for the $6 registration transfer.

Emissions tests are needed only for cars based in the urban areas of Clark and Washoe counties. On a private sale the buyer pays for the test. New cars are exempt for their first three registrations, hybrids for five model years, and electric cars always.

Electric and hybrid cars

Nevada has no extra registration fee for electric or hybrid cars in its official fee sources. They pay the same $33 registration and GST as any car.
