The short answer
$0. Florida does not charge electric vehicles an extra registration fee in 2026. Under Florida law (s. 320.08001), an electric car pays the same license tax as a gas car of the same type, and the FLHSMV fee list has no EV or plug-in hybrid surcharge.
Where the $250 figure comes from
Some websites say Florida charges EV owners $250 a year. That number comes from Senate Bill 804, filed on December 9, 2025 by Senator Truenow. It would have added a $250 fee for battery electric vehicles at first registration and every renewal, starting July 1, 2026, on top of the normal fees. Plug-in hybrids were not included.
The bill never passed. Its history on the Florida Senate site:
| Date | Action |
|---|---|
| December 9, 2025 | Filed |
| December 16, 2025 | Referred to Transportation; Appropriations Committee on Transportation, Tourism, and Economic Development; Fiscal Policy |
| January 13, 2026 | Introduced |
| March 13, 2026 | Died in Transportation |
What Florida EV drivers actually pay
The same as everyone else registering a car in Florida:
- A one-time $225 initial registration fee if the car has never had a Florida plate.
- A $28 license plate if you need a new plate.
- The annual registration by weight: about $28.10 to $46.10 a year for most cars, with standard fees included.
- A title fee, and 6% sales tax plus your county's surtax when you buy.

Will it come back?
It could. Florida lawmakers have looked at EV revenue before: a 2024 House bill on the impact of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on state revenues (CS/CS/HB 107) also died, on March 8, 2024. Any new fee would need a new bill to pass both chambers. If that happens we'll update this page; until then the extra fee is $0. Most other states do charge one; see EV registration fees in all 50 states. A separate federal EV fee has also been proposed in Congress but is not law; see the proposed $130 federal EV fee.
Frequently asked questions
Do plug-in hybrids pay an extra fee in Florida?
No. There is no plug-in hybrid surcharge on the FLHSMV fee list, and even the failed SB 804 would have charged only battery electric vehicles.
Is Florida EV registration cheaper than for a gas car?
No, it's the same. State law sets the EV license tax equal to that of a comparable gas vehicle.
Did Florida pass an EV fee in 2026?
No. SB 804, the 2026 bill that proposed the $250 EV fee, died in committee on March 13, 2026, and Florida law still sets the EV license tax equal to that of a gas vehicle.
