How much is car registration in Oregon?

Oregon registers cars for two years at a time, and the fee depends on fuel economy: $126, $136, $216 or $376 for an electric car. A brand-new car pays for four years up front. Three counties add their own fee, and Oregon has no sales tax.

The short answer

A passenger car in Oregon costs $126 to $376 to register for two years, depending on its fuel economy. A car rated 40 MPG or more, or an electric car, can enroll in OReGO and pay $86 for two years plus a per-mile charge instead. If you live in Multnomah County, add $112; in Washington or Clackamas County, add $60. Elsewhere there's no county fee. A brand-new car pays double, because its first registration lasts four years.

The fee is set by MPG

Oregon's passenger registration fee depends on the vehicle's fuel economy rating. These are the DMV's two-year amounts:

Fuel economy2-year registrationWorks out per year
0 to 19 MPG$126$63
20 to 39 MPG$136$68
40 MPG or more$216$108
Electric$376$188
40+ MPG or electric, enrolled in OReGO$86, plus a per-mile charge$43, plus the per-mile charge

The fees for 40+ MPG and electric cars went up $30 a year on December 31, 2025. ODOT's OReGO page still shows the older amounts ($156 and $316) in its table; the DMV fee page shows the current $216 and $376, and that's what we use. From July 1, 2027, drivers of used electric vehicles will choose between a flat fee and paying by the mile when they renew (ODOT).

The 2-year term, and why a new car pays for 4

An Oregon registration normally lasts two years, so you pay the two-year amount at each renewal. A brand-new vehicle with a manufacturer's certificate of origin gets a four-year first registration, so the DMV charges double the registration fee and double the county fee at purchase (ORS 803.415; DMV fee page).

Fuel economyBrand-new car, first 4 years
0 to 19 MPG$252
20 to 39 MPG$272
40 MPG or more$432
Electric$752

Three counties charge their own registration fee, collected by the DMV with the state fee:

Both totals match our Oregon calculator. An Oregon dealer owes the 0.5% privilege tax and may pass it on to you. In Washington or Clackamas County the renewal would be $196; anywhere else, $136.

Trucks and motorcycles

No sales tax, but a 0.5% tax on new cars

Oregon has no sales tax. A vehicle bought from a dealer with 7,500 miles or less, 26,000 lbs GVWR or less and never registered in Oregon is subject to a 0.5% tax on the retail price: the vehicle privilege tax from an Oregon dealer, or the vehicle use tax if you buy from an out-of-state dealer. Trade-ins don't reduce the price. Private sales aren't taxed (Oregon Department of Revenue).

What this guide doesn't cover

Frequently asked questions

Is Oregon car registration for one year or two?

Two years for passenger cars, pickups up to 10,000 lbs and motorcycles. A brand-new car's first registration is four years. Trucks registered by weight over 10,000 lbs pay a one-year fee.

Does a hybrid or electric car cost more to register in Oregon?

Oregon charges cars rated 40 MPG or more $216, and electric cars $376, for two years, compared with $126 or $136 for less efficient cars. Enrolling in OReGO lowers the registration to $86 in exchange for a per-mile charge.

How much is the Multnomah County registration fee?

$112 for two years for a car or pickup and $78 for a motorcycle, on top of the state fee. A brand-new car pays $224, for four years.

Does Oregon charge sales tax when I register a car?

No. The only tax is the 0.5% privilege or use tax on new vehicles bought from a dealer (7,500 miles or less, never registered in Oregon).

Calculate your Oregon fees

Your vehicle

A truck operated at 10,000 lbs or less (with its load) gets the same 2-year registration as a passenger car. Above 10,000 lbs it pays a yearly fee by registration weight.
$
Only used for the 0.5% vehicle privilege or use tax on new or nearly new vehicles bought from a dealer. Oregon has no sales tax.
$
Sales, use or excise tax on the vehicle itself that the out-of-state dealer charged. It is credited against the Oregon use tax.
Registration weight is the empty weight of the truck and anything it tows (except light trailers of 8,000 lbs or less, campers and travel trailers) plus the heaviest load it will carry.
The DMV uses the manufacturer's combined MPG for your VIN (fueleconomy.gov). It sets the title fee and, for passenger registration, the registration fee.
Only these three counties add a registration fee. If you live in one of them but the vehicle stays in another county, pick 'Any other Oregon county'.
Most vehicles in the Portland and Medford areas must pass a DEQ test before registering; newer vehicles are exempt. The fee is paid to DEQ only if the vehicle passes.
