Ohio Expired Registration: the $10 Late Fee, No Grace Period and the Fine (2026)

Ohio charges a $10 late fee, once, if you renew more than 30 days after your registration expired. Those 30 days are not a grace period: driving on an expired registration is an offense from the first day, with a fine of up to $150 set by the court. Renewing late can even make the license tax a little smaller.

The short answer

QuestionOhio answer
Late renewal fee$10, on top of the normal fees, if you renew more than 30 days after the registration expired. It's charged once. It doesn't grow however late you are.
Grace periodNone. The 30 days only decide when the $10 fee starts. They don't let you drive. Driving on an expired registration is an offense from the first day after it expires.
Fine for driving on itA minor misdemeanor: a fine of up to $150, set by the court. There's no fixed amount and no jail. Court costs come on top, but each court sets its own, so we can't give one statewide figure.
Typical late renewalGas car, 2 full months late, no local tax: $51. With your district's permissive tax: $51 to $81.

The late fee: $10, charged once

If you file your renewal more than 30 days after your registration expired, the BMV adds a $10 late fee. That's the whole penalty at the counter. It's the same $10 whether you're 31 days late or 11 months late.

The fee must be waived for a seasonal vehicle that hasn't been driven on public roads since the registration expired, if you can show that. It may also be waived for other good cause.

The late fee is not the same as the fine. The late fee is what you pay the BMV when you renew. The fine is what a court charges if you're stopped while driving on an expired registration. They are separate bills.

There is no grace period

Many pages call Ohio's 30 days a grace period. They aren't. They only decide when the $10 late fee starts. Your plates are expired, and illegal to drive on, from the first day after the expiration date.

You can renew up to 90 days before your registration expires. The BMV mails a renewal notice at least 45 days ahead. If the notice never arrives, that doesn't excuse a late renewal.

The fine for driving on an expired registration

Driving on an expired registration is a minor misdemeanor. That covers two things: driving a car whose registration hasn't been renewed, and not showing a valid plate and sticker. The court sets the fine, up to $150. There's no fixed fine, and a minor misdemeanor carries no jail time.

Court costs are added on top. Each court sets its own costs, so there is no statewide figure we can give you.

Renewing late can lower the license tax

This is the part almost nobody mentions. Ohio's $36 car registration is made of two parts: a $20 license tax and a $16 state administration fee. If you renew during or after the second month of your registration period, the $20 license tax is cut by 1/12 for each full month that has passed. The $16 state fee and the $8 deputy registrar fee (the fee the license agency charges for handling the renewal) are never cut.

The permissive tax (the local registration tax of $0 to $30 set by your county, city or township) stays in full through the fifth month. From the sixth month it is halved.

So you still pay the $10 late fee, but the tax part gets a little smaller. It's never a reason to wait: the fine for driving on an expired registration is far bigger than the few dollars the cut saves.

Worked example: gas car renewed 2 full months late

A gasoline passenger car. The renewal is filed in the third month of the registration period, so 2 full months have passed. The district has no permissive tax.

  • License tax: $20 minus 2/12 ($3.34) = $16.66, rounded up to $17
  • State administration fee: $16
  • Deputy registrar fee: $8
  • Late fee: $10

Total: $17 + $16 + $8 + $10 = $51. With a permissive tax of $0 to $30, the total is $51 to $81.

The $54 figure you'll see on many sites assumes the full $20 tax ($44 + $10). From the second month after expiry, the tax is cut as shown above.

Our Ohio calculator works this out for you. Choose "Renewal only", then pick how late the renewal is. It applies the $10 fee once you're more than 30 days late and cuts the license tax for each full month. For motorcycles, trucks and multi-year terms, the late prorated amount isn't confirmed by an official source, so the calculator shows it as not available.

Other things that can hold up a late renewal

There is no reinstatement fee for an expired registration, however late. The BMV's reinstatement fees are for suspended driver licenses. You also keep your plate: it is renewed with a new sticker.

How to renew

Online at OPLATES.com, by mail, or in person at any deputy registrar. A hybrid adds $100 a year, a plug-in hybrid $150 and a battery electric car $200. Those fuel fees are not cut when you renew late.
