The short answer
One year of tags for an Ohio passenger car costs $36 in state registration, plus an $8 deputy registrar fee, plus a permissive tax of $0 to $30 set by your local taxing district. That's $44 to $74 a year for a gas car. A hybrid adds $100 a year, a plug-in hybrid $150 and a battery electric car $200. The state part is the same in every county; the permissive tax is what makes your bill different from a neighbor's in the next town.
The state registration fee
The BMV publishes one yearly amount per vehicle type. Behind each one are two charges in Ohio law: a license tax (ORC 4503.04) and an application fee, which rose to $16 on January 1, 2026 (ORC 4503.10).
| Vehicle | Yearly registration | License tax + application fee |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger car, SUV or van | $36 | $20 + $16 |
| Motorcycle | $30 | $14 + $16 |
| Non-commercial truck, up to 3/4 ton | $51 | $35 + $16 |
| Non-commercial truck, over 3/4 to 1 ton | $86 | $70 + $16 |
These amounts took effect on January 1, 2026 under House Bill 96. Pages that still quote $31 for a passenger car are using the old figure.
Extra yearly fee for hybrids and electric cars
| Fuel | Extra per year |
|---|---|
| Gasoline, diesel or other | $0 |
| Hybrid | $100 |
| Plug-in hybrid | $150 |
| Battery electric | $200 |
| Electric or hybrid motorcycle | Not available: our sources don't say whether these fees apply to motorcycles |
The fee is paid with the registration, for each year you register (ORC 4503.10).
The deputy registrar fee
Each registration transaction also carries a deputy registrar service fee, charged once per transaction. Since House Bill 96 it is $8 for one year (ORC 4503.038). For a multi-year registration it doesn't simply multiply:
| Registration term | 1 year | 2 years | 3 years | 4 years | 5 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deputy registrar fee | $8 | $12 | $16 | $20 | $24 |
The registration fee, any hybrid or EV fee, and the permissive tax are paid for each year of the term.
Permissive tax: why two Ohio drivers pay different amounts
The permissive tax is a local tax on vehicle registration. Your county, your city or village, and your township may each levy it in $5 steps, and the total is capped at $30 a year per vehicle. Which levies apply depends on your taxing district, not simply your county: two addresses in the same county can owe different amounts (Ohio BMV permissive tax distribution).
| Permissive tax in your district | Gas passenger car, 1 year, total |
|---|---|
| $0 | $44 |
| $5 | $49 |
| $10 | $54 |
| $15 | $59 |
| $20 | $64 |
| $25 | $69 |
| $30 (the maximum) | $74 |
A single permissive tax amount per county is not available, because it's set district by district. The easiest place to find yours is your last renewal notice or receipt; the BMV also publishes the district list. Our calculator's $20 default is only an example.
Worked examples
| Gas car, 1-year renewal, $20 permissive tax | Electric car, 1-year renewal, $20 permissive tax | Gas car, 2-year renewal, $20 permissive tax | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registration | $36 | $36 | $72 ($36 x 2) |
| Electric vehicle fee | – | $200 | – |
| Permissive tax | $20 | $20 | $40 ($20 x 2) |
| Deputy registrar fee | $8 | $8 | $12 |
| Total | $64 | $264 | $124 |
All three totals match our Ohio calculator with "Renewal only" chosen. With the same $20 permissive tax, a motorcycle renewal comes to $58 ($30 + $20 + $8) and a non-commercial truck up to 3/4 ton to $79 ($51 + $20 + $8). Renewing more than 30 days late adds a one-time $10 late fee. From the second month after expiration the $20 license tax part of the $36 is cut by 1/12 for each full month, so the gas car renewed 2 full months late comes to $71 ($17 + $16 + $20 + $8 + $10). See Ohio expired registration for the late fee, the fine and the proration rule.
Commercial trucks
A commercial truck doesn't use the flat truck fees above. It pays a license tax by declared gross vehicle weight plus a $35 application fee, the deputy registrar fee and any permissive tax (ORC 4503.042, 4503.10).
| Declared gross weight | License tax per year |
|---|---|
| Up to 2,000 lbs | $45 |
| 2,001 to 6,000 lbs | $70 |
| 6,001 to 10,000 lbs | $85 |
| 10,001 to 14,000 lbs | $105 |
| 14,001 to 18,000 lbs | $125 |
| 18,001 to 22,000 lbs | $150 |
| 22,001 to 26,000 lbs | $175 |
| 26,001 to 30,000 lbs | $355 |
| 30,001 to 34,000 lbs | $420 |
| 34,001 to 38,000 lbs | $480 |
| 38,001 to 42,000 lbs | $540 |
| 42,001 to 46,000 lbs | $600 |
| 46,001 to 50,000 lbs | $660 |
| 50,001 to 54,000 lbs | $725 |
| 54,001 to 58,000 lbs | $785 |
| 58,001 to 62,000 lbs | $855 |
| 62,001 to 66,000 lbs | $925 |
| 66,001 to 70,000 lbs | $995 |
| 70,001 to 74,000 lbs | $1,080 |
| 74,001 to 78,000 lbs | $1,200 |
| Over 78,000 lbs | $1,340 |
Example: a commercial truck declared at 28,000 lbs, renewed for one year with a $20 permissive tax, pays $355 + $35 + $8 + $20 = $418, the same as our calculator. Apportioned (IRP) trucks and farm trucks are priced differently and aren't covered here.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to renew Ohio tags?
For a gas passenger car, $36 plus the $8 deputy registrar fee plus your district's permissive tax of $0 to $30: $44 to $74 for one year. Hybrids add $100, plug-in hybrids $150 and electric cars $200.
What is the permissive tax on Ohio license plates?
