The short answer
| Question | North Carolina answer |
|---|---|
| Late renewal fee | $15 if expired less than one month, $20 from one month to under two, $25 at two months or more. $25 is the maximum. It's charged on every renewal paid after the expiration date. |
| Grace period | You may drive until midnight on the 15th of the month after your sticker expires. The grace period never waives the late fee. |
| Fine for driving on it | After the 15th: a Class 3 misdemeanor, fine up to $200, plus $193 in standard court costs if you're convicted. |
| Typical late renewal | Car renewed 45 days late, inspection already passed: $66.25 in state charges ($46.25 + $20), plus your county property tax and its interest. |
The late fee: $15, $20 or $25
North Carolina's late fee steps up with how late you are, then stops:
| How long expired when you renew | Late fee |
|---|---|
| Less than one month | $15 |
| One month to under two months | $20 |
| Two months or more | $25 (the maximum) |
It applies from the day after the expiration date. If you renew by mail, the postmark date counts.
Two waivers exist. Deployed military members pay no late fee if they renew within 30 days after the deployment ends. And there's no late fee at all if you turned in the plate on or before the expiration date.
The grace period protects you from a ticket, not from the fee
A sticker registration expires at midnight on the last day of the month on the sticker. The law then lets you keep driving until midnight on the 15th of the following month.
That grace period is only about driving. The late fee law has a section headed "Grace Period Inapplicable", and it says the 15 days don't apply to the late fee. Renew on the 2nd day of the grace window and you still owe the $15. Many websites say the opposite. They're wrong.
The fine after the 15th
From the 16th of the following month, driving without a current registration is a Class 3 misdemeanor. Knowingly displaying an expired plate is a separate Class 3 misdemeanor. The maximum fine is $200.
If you're convicted, the standard court costs in the courts' chart in effect from January 1, 2026 add up to $193: $176 in district court costs, a $10 fee for motor vehicle cases, a $2 DNA fee and $5 for serving the citation. So a conviction can cost up to about $393 before you've paid anything to renew. Court costs are charged only on conviction.
The inspection comes first
The DMV can't renew a registration without a current inspection, and it must be done within the 90 days before the registration expires. If your last inspection falls outside that window, the car must be inspected and pass before the renewal goes through. Every county requires a safety inspection, and 19 counties also require an emissions test. Stations set their own inspection prices, so there's no state figure for what you'll pay.
Driving with an overdue inspection is a separate infraction, with a fine of up to $50. If the inspection is four months or more overdue, a $50 civil penalty applies automatically, and you can't renew until it's paid.
Worked example: renewed 45 days late
A standard private passenger car. Its inspection already passed inside the 90-day window. It's renewed 45 days after the expiration date, in person or by mail.
- Registration: $46.25
- Late fee (one month to under two months): $20
State charges: $46.25 + $20 = $66.25.
On top of that comes the county vehicle property tax and its interest. The tax is set by your county, so there's no statewide figure. Late tax draws interest of 5% for the rest of the month after the expiration month, then 0.75% a month, so about 5.75% of the tax bill at day 45.
How to renew, and what it costs
A standard private passenger registration is $46.25 a year, the fee in effect since July 1, 2024. You can renew an expired registration online, at a kiosk, at a License Plate Agency or by mail. Online renewals go through a payment processor that adds $3 + 1.85%: that's the processor's charge, not a state fee.
Under Tag & Tax Together, your county's vehicle property tax is collected with the renewal. Since October 1, 2026 no sticker or printed card is mailed: your renewal receipt is your proof of registration.

Frequently asked questions
Does the 15-day grace period save me the late fee in NC?
No. The grace period only lets you drive until midnight on the 15th of the next month. The late fee law says the grace period doesn't apply to the fee, so a renewal one day after expiry still costs $15 extra.
How much is the late fee for expired registration in NC?
$15 if less than one month late, $20 from one to under two months, and $25 at two months or more. It never goes above $25.
How much is the ticket for expired registration in NC?
After the 15th of the next month it's a Class 3 misdemeanor: a fine of up to $200, plus $193 in standard court costs if you're convicted.
Can I renew my registration online after it expires in NC?
Yes. You can renew an expired registration online, at a kiosk, at a License Plate Agency or by mail. The late fee is added.
My inspection expired too. What do I do first?
Get the car inspected and passed first. The renewal stays blocked until then. If the inspection is four months or more overdue, a $50 civil penalty is added and must be paid before you can renew.
Is there a late fee if I turned in my plate?
No. If you surrendered the plate on or before the expiration date, there's no late fee. Deployed military members who renew within 30 days after deployment ends don't pay it either.
