The short answer
| Question | New Jersey answer |
|---|---|
| Late renewal fee | None. The MVC's fee schedule has no late fee, surcharge or monthly penalty for a late renewal. You pay the same class fee as on time. |
| Grace period | None. The registration expires, and the certificate becomes void, on the expiration date. From the next day the car is unregistered. |
| Fine for driving on it | Up to $100 per violation. Parking or standing an unregistered car on a public road is a violation too. Police may tow the car to storage at the owner's expense. |
| Typical late renewal | A Class 7 car (under 3,500 lbs) older than two model years: $46.50, the same as on time. |
There is no late fee to pay
This surprises people, and many websites get it wrong. New Jersey has no late renewal fee. The MVC's full registration and title fee schedule contains no late charge of any kind, and the law sets none. Renewing late costs exactly what renewing on time costs.
What New Jersey uses instead is enforcement. The risk of an expired registration is a ticket and a tow, not a bigger MVC bill. If you see "tiered" late fees such as $25, $60 or $100 for New Jersey, they don't exist.
Don't confuse this with the $25 late title penalty. That's for titling a car you just bought, not for renewing a registration. Our New Jersey title transfer guide covers it.
There is no grace period
Your registration expires on your day of birth in the 12th month after it was issued (the 48th month for a new car's first registration, and the last day of the month for a lease). On that date it expires and the certificate becomes void. There's no grace period in the law or in the MVC's publications.
The MVC can extend dates for everyone for good cause, as an official action. That isn't a grace period you can claim yourself.
The fine, and the tow
Driving an unregistered car can cost a fine of up to $100 per violation. The same limit applies to parking or standing an unregistered car on a public road: that's a violation by itself. There's no higher fine for a repeat expired registration ticket.
A police officer may have the car towed to storage at the owner's expense. Towing and storage charges are set by tow companies and towns, so we can't give an amount. Court costs are set by the municipal court and are not available either, so we don't show a "total with costs".
Worked examples: a Class 7 car
A car under 3,500 lbs, older than two model years.
- (A) Expired, renewed late: $46.50 + $0 late fee = $46.50.
- (B) Ticketed while expired: $46.50 plus a fine of up to $100. Court costs and any towing come on top (not available).
- (C) Suspended for an insurance lapse, then restored and renewed: $100 restoration fee + $46.50 = $146.50. If your driver license was suspended too, $246.50.
Expired is not the same as suspended
A registration that has simply expired isn't suspended, and renewing it needs no restoration fee.
A suspension is a different problem. It usually follows an insurance lapse. To restore it you prove you have current New Jersey insurance and pay a $100 restoration fee for each suspended privilege: $200 if your driver license was suspended as well.
The heavy penalties you may read about belong to suspensions and insurance, not to expiration:
- Driving while your registration is suspended or revoked: $500 the first time, then $750 plus 1 to 5 days in jail, then $1,000 plus 10 days.
- Driving uninsured: $300 to $1,000 the first time, and up to $5,000 plus 14 days on a repeat, with an MVC surcharge of $250 a year for 3 years on top.
