What happens if you don't register your car in New York?

Driving an unregistered car in New York is punishable by a $75 to $300 fine or up to 15 days in jail. If your registration expired within the last 60 days, the minimum fine drops to $40. You can renew online up to one year after expiry; after that you must register the car again.

The short answer

New York law makes driving a car without a valid registration punishable by a fine of $75 to $300, up to 15 days in jail, or both. If the problem is only that you didn't renew a registration that was valid within the last 60 days, the minimum fine is $40 instead of $75. The DMV doesn't charge a separate late fee for renewing late, but you can't renew online more than a year after expiry.

Renewing late

More than 1 year afterYou can't renew; register the vehicle again at a DMV office or by mail

Two more rules from the DMV: a registration that ends on a weekend or holiday is extended to midnight of the next business day, and you can't renew if the vehicle hasn't passed inspection in the last 12 months.

Don't cancel insurance on a registered car

New York requires liability insurance for as long as a car is registered, even if you don't drive it. If you let the insurance lapse without turning in your plates first, you may owe a civil penalty for each uninsured day or have your registration suspended, and after 90 uninsured days your driver license is suspended too. If you're taking a car off the road, return the plates before ending the insurance.

What renewal costs

A standard renewal is the two-year registration fee ($26 to $140 by weight), your county's vehicle use tax and, in the 12 MCTD counties, the $50 MCTD fee. Run the New York calculator with "Renewal only".

Frequently asked questions

Is there a grace period for registration in New York?

The DMV's renewal page doesn't mention one, apart from the automatic extension when the expiry date falls on a weekend or holiday. The law sets a lower $40 minimum fine when the registration expired within the previous 60 days.

Is there a late fee to renew in New York?

The DMV doesn't list one: a late renewal pays the normal fee shown on your notice. The cost of being late is the fine if you're stopped while driving.

What if my registration expired more than a year ago?

You can't renew it. You have to register the vehicle again, at a DMV office or by mail.
