Expired Registration in Pennsylvania: No Late Fee, Fines & Renewal (2026)

Pennsylvania has no late fee for renewing an expired registration: you pay the standard fee. There's no grace period either. The fine for driving on an expired registration is $75 or double the registration fee, whichever is greater, reduced to $25 if the vehicle was registered in Pennsylvania within the 60 days before the offense.

The short answer

QuestionPennsylvania answer
Late renewal feeNone. An expired registration renews at the standard fee only (75 Pa.C.S. § 1309; PennDOT's renewal pages list no late charge).
Grace periodNone. Registration expires on the last day of the month on the registration card (§ 1307(d)), and driving unregistered is prohibited from then on (§ 1301(a)).
Fine for driving on it$75 or double the registration fee, whichever is greater. Reduced to $25 if the vehicle was registered in Pennsylvania within the 60 days before the offense (§ 1301(d), summary offense).

The late fee doesn't exist; the ticket does

People search for Pennsylvania's late registration fee, but there isn't one. If your registration has expired, PennDOT renews it at the standard fee and nothing more.

The real cost of an expired registration is the ticket if you drive the car. Driving an unregistered vehicle is a summary offense under 75 Pa.C.S. § 1301. The fine is $75 or double the registration fee, whichever is greater.

The 60-day rule that cuts the fine to $25

Section 1301(d) reduces the fine to $25 if the vehicle was registered in Pennsylvania within the 60 days before the offense. In practice, if your registration lapsed recently and you're stopped, the fine is far lower than if it has been expired for months.

Example

Your registration expired at the end of last month and you're stopped this month: the vehicle was registered within the previous 60 days, so the fine is $25. If it had been expired for six months, the fine would be $75 or double your registration fee, whichever is greater.

Expired is not the same as suspended

You may see "restoration fees" of $70 or $88 mentioned for Pennsylvania. Those come from 75 Pa.C.S. § 1960 and apply after a registration has been suspended, for example for an insurance lapse or unpaid tolls. They don't apply to a registration that has simply expired.
