Washington Expired Tabs: No Late Fee, No Grace Period, the Ticket and Trip Permits (2026)

Washington charges no late fee for renewing expired tabs. A car up to 4,000 lbs renews for $83.00 whether you're on time or three months late. There's no grace period. Driving on expired tabs is a traffic infraction, and the fine is set by the courts' penalty schedule, not by the Department of Licensing.

The short answer

QuestionWashington answer
Late renewal feeNone. Renewing expired tabs costs the same as renewing on time. There's no late fee, penalty or interest in Washington's registration fee schedule.
Grace periodNone. Tabs expire on the date shown on them. If that day is a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, you have until the end of the next business day. That's a calendar rollover, not a grace period.
Fine for driving on themA traffic infraction. The fine is set by the court's penalty schedule plus statutory assessments. It varies, and it isn't a fee the DOL collects. We couldn't confirm the amount in an official schedule, so it's not available here.
Typical late renewalCar up to 4,000 lbs, renewed 3 months late: $83.00, the same as on time.

There is no late fee

Washington has no late fee for expired tabs. The state's full registration fee schedule has no late fee, penalty or interest in it. The Department of Licensing's renewal page names no late fee either. The only things that block a renewal are unpaid tickets or unpaid toll fees.

That doesn't mean expired tabs carry no penalty. The penalty is the ticket for driving on them, which is a court fine, not a renewal fee.

Worked example: a car renewed 3 months late

A standard car up to 4,000 lbs, outside the Sound Transit district, renewed 3 months after its tabs expired.

ChargeAmount
License fee$30.00
Weight fee (up to 4,000 lbs)$35.00
Filing fee$6.00
Service fee$11.00
Plate technology fee$0.25
License service fee$0.75
Late fee$0.00
Total$83.00

That's exactly what an on-time renewal costs. It doesn't include the RTA tax for addresses in the Sound Transit district, local transportation benefit district fees or the electric and hybrid fees: see how much car tabs cost in Washington.

The real cost of renewing late: a shorter year

There are no back fees, however long the tabs have been expired. But your expiration month doesn't move. Washington only gives a car a new registration year when it changes owner (or in the military case below). So if you renew three months late, your new tabs still expire on the old date, and you've paid a full year's fees for nine months.

The ticket for driving on expired tabs

Not renewing before you drive is a traffic infraction. The law doesn't set a dollar amount. The fine comes from the courts' monetary penalty schedule plus statutory assessments, and we couldn't confirm that figure in a readable official schedule, so we don't print one.

Two things you may read elsewhere are wrong for expired tabs:

One more risk: a car whose tabs have been expired for more than 45 days and that's parked on a public street may be impounded.

Moving the car legally: trip permits

A car with expired tabs counts as unregistered. To drive it legally before you renew, for example to a licensing office, buy a trip permit: $36 at a vehicle licensing office, in person only. That's the $25 permit fee plus the $11 service fee, with no filing fee. Each permit covers 3 days in a row, you can have at most 3 per vehicle in any 30 days, and there are no refunds.

The military exception

Military members stationed outside Washington whose tabs expired less than 12 months ago can get a new full-year registration period.

No emissions test

Washington's emissions testing program ended on January 1, 2020. There's no emissions step or fee at renewal.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a late fee for expired tabs in Washington?

No. Washington charges no late fee. A car up to 4,000 lbs renews for $83.00 whether it's on time or months late.

How much is the fine for expired tabs in WA?

Driving on expired tabs is a traffic infraction. The fine is set by the court's penalty schedule plus statutory assessments, and it varies. We couldn't confirm the amount in an official schedule. The $529 figure you may see is for never registering a vehicle at all, a different offense.

Is there a grace period for expired tabs in Washington state?

No. The only relief is a rollover: if your tabs expire on a weekend or legal holiday, you have until the end of the next business day.

My tabs expired months ago. Do I owe back fees?

No back fees. But your new tabs still expire on the original anniversary, so renewing late buys a shorter year at the full price.

Can I drive my car to the licensing office on expired tabs?

Not legally. Buy a $36 trip permit at a vehicle licensing office first. It covers 3 days.
