Expired Registration in Massachusetts: No Late Fee, But a Criminal Fine (2026)

Renewing an expired registration in Massachusetts costs nothing extra: the RMV charges no late fee. But there's no grace period, and driving on an expired registration is a criminal offense with a fine of up to $100 for a first offense and up to $1,000 after that.

The short answer

QuestionMassachusetts answer
Late renewal feeNone. An expired registration renews at the standard fee for your plate type.
Grace periodNone. Passenger registrations expire on the last day of the month on the decal, and driving unregistered is prohibited from then on.
Penalty for driving on itA criminal offense, not a civil ticket: a fine of up to $100 for a first offense and up to $1,000 for any later offense (G.L. c. 90, § 9).
What can stop you renewingUnpaid motor vehicle excise tax owed to your city or town.

$0 to renew late, but not $0 to drive late

This is the whole Massachusetts story. The RMV's renewal materials list no late fee, and none appears in the registration law (G.L. c. 90). If your registration has expired, you renew it at the same price you'd have paid on time.

The cost comes if you drive the car before renewing. Under G.L. c. 90, § 9, operating an unregistered vehicle is a criminal offense. The fine is up to $100 for a first offense and up to $1,000 for any later one. The law sets maximums, not fixed amounts.

Is there a grace period?

No. A passenger registration expires on the last day of the month shown on the decal. From the next day, the car is unregistered and you shouldn't drive it until you've renewed.

What can block your renewal

The RMV won't renew a registration while you owe motor vehicle excise tax to your city or town. Excise is a separate local charge, not an RMV late fee. Pay it first, and you can then renew.

How to renew

Renew through the RMV at the standard fee for your plate type; there is nothing extra to pay for being late. Until the renewal is done, leave the car parked.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a grace period for expired registration in Massachusetts?

No. Passenger registrations expire on the last day of the month on the decal, and driving an unregistered car is prohibited from that point.

How much is the late fee for an expired registration in Massachusetts?

There isn't one. The RMV renews an expired registration at the standard fee. You may see figures like $10, $30 or a monthly charge online; we couldn't confirm any of them in an official source.

What is the fine for driving with an expired registration in Massachusetts?

Up to $100 for a first offense and up to $1,000 for any later offense, under G.L. c. 90, § 9. It's a criminal offense, not a civil ticket.

Why can't I renew my Massachusetts registration?

A common reason is unpaid motor vehicle excise tax to your city or town. That's a local charge, separate from the RMV. Pay it, then renew.
