Why is car registration so expensive in Iowa?

Because Iowa charges 1% of the car's original list price every year, plus 40 cents per 100 lbs, and the price part isn't reduced until the car is more than 7 model years old. A car that listed at $30,000 and weighs 3,500 lbs pays $314 a year for its first seven model years. Buying is a different story: Iowa's 5% fee for new registration is lower than the sales tax in most of the states we cover.

The short answer

Three things make Iowa's yearly bill high:

  1. It's based on the original list price. The fee is 1% of the value the Iowa DOT fixes for the model, which is its retail list price when new, not what you paid or what the car is worth today.
  2. It doesn't go down for seven model years. The list-price part is only cut after 7 model years (to 75%) and after 9 (to 50%). From 12 model years old the fee is a flat $50.
  3. Weight is added on top: 40 cents for every 100 lbs or part of 100 lbs. Electric cars add $130 a year and plug-in hybrids $65.

Among the states we cover, Iowa's fees for a $30,000 car, without taxes, are $349.00: the 39th cheapest of 49. With the purchase fee included, its total is $1,859.00, the 15th cheapest of 41. See the cheapest and most expensive states to register a car.

What a $30,000 car pays each year

A car with a $30,000 list price that weighs 3,500 lbs:

Car's ageList-price partWeight partYearly fee
Up to 7 model years$300 (1%)$14$314
8 or 9 model years$225 (75%)$14$239
10 or 11 model years$150 (50%)$14$164
12 model years or olderFlat fee$50

Over its first seven model years that car pays about $2,200 in registration fees ($314 × 7), and a sale doesn't change it: the fee follows the model's list price and age, not the owner. An electric version adds $130 a year, so $444.

What you pay when you buy

Iowa has no sales tax on vehicles. Instead you pay a fee for new registration of $10 plus 5% of the purchase price, with no local add-on, on dealer and private sales alike. A trade-in titled in your name and a manufacturer's cash rebate aren't charged. Our Iowa calculator's starting example (a new gasoline car from a dealer, 3,500 lbs, list price equal to the price) at five prices:

Due at registration, by price. The example assumes: Bought from a dealer; Original list price (MSRP): same as the price; Vehicle weight: 3,500 lbs; Vehicle age: Up to 7 model years old; Fuel type: Gas, diesel or regular hybrid.

$80,000$814.00$35.00$4,010.00$4,859.00

The calculator shows a full year of registration. When you buy, the county treasurer charges only the months left in your registration year, and gives a credit for unexpired months on a car you sold or traded in the last six months, so your first bill can be lower.

Questions

Why didn't my Iowa registration go down this year?

The list-price part of the fee stays the same for the first 7 model years. It drops to 75% after 7 model years, 50% after 9, and to a flat $50 at 12 model years old.

Is Iowa registration based on what I paid for the car?

No. The yearly fee uses the model's original retail list price, fixed by the Iowa DOT, plus weight. What you paid matters only for the one-time 5% fee for new registration.

Do electric cars cost more to register in Iowa?

Yes. Electric cars pay $130 a year and plug-in hybrids $65 on top of the normal fee.

Do older cars pay less in Iowa?

Yes, but only after 7 model years. From 12 model years old every passenger car pays a flat $50.

Calculate your Iowa fees

Your vehicle

$
Not needed for renewals, gifts or new residents. A sale between family members for money is charged like any other sale.
$
The value of a vehicle you trade toward this one, if it's titled in the same name. Selling your old car separately doesn't count.
$
A manufacturer's cash rebate applied to the price isn't charged the 5%.
$
The retail list price when the car was new, not what you paid. Iowa's yearly fee is based on it, and it stays the same as the car ages.
lbs
The weight on your title or registration. The fee adds 40 cents for every 100 lbs or part of 100 lbs.
Older cars pay less: Iowa cuts the list-price part of the fee after 7 and 9 model years and charges a flat $50 from 12.
