New York registration late fee calculator

New York's DMV doesn't charge a late fee: a late renewal costs the normal two-year fee. The risk is a ticket for driving an unregistered car, with a fine of at least $40 if the registration expired within 60 days and $75 to $300 after that. More than a year after expiry you can't renew and must register again.

  • You can still renew online, by mail or at a DMV office.
  • If you're ticketed for driving it, the fine is at least $40 and up to $300, because it expired within 60 days.
  • You can't renew without a passing inspection in the last 12 months.

The renewal fee itself is the normal two-year fee by weight, plus your county's use tax and, in the 12 MCTD counties, the MCTD fee. The New York calculator further down gives it with "Renewal only".
