The short answer
You can drive for five working days after your Texas registration expires without a penalty. After that, police can give you a citation of up to $200. If you are cited, you have to renew in person at your county tax office and pay an extra 20% of the registration fee. If you aren't cited, you can still renew online for up to 12 months after the expiration date.
Late renewal: what you pay
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Within 5 working days of expiry | No penalty for driving; renew as normal |
| Expired, not cited | Renew online up to 12 months after expiry, or in person; your registration month doesn't change |
| Cited for expired registration | Renew in person; 20% penalty on the registration fee; registration month doesn't change |
| Expired with a valid reason (see below) | New 12-month registration starting the month you renew |
Worked example: cited with a standard passenger car
| Base registration fee (most cars and light trucks) | $50.75 |
| 20% penalty (0.20 × $50.75) | $10.15 |
That is on top of the normal renewal fees (county local fee, inspection replacement fee, processing fee) and any fine on the citation itself, up to $200. Run the Texas calculator with "Renewal only" for the normal fees.
Why your renewal month usually stays the same
Under Transportation Code § 502.045, a late registration is registered for 12 months without changing your original month, so paying late doesn't buy you extra months. If you have a valid reason for the delay, the county can start a new 12-month period from the month you register instead. The TxDMV manual lists examples of valid reasons:
- a receipt for extensive repairs on the vehicle,
- evidence you were out of the country,
- evidence the vehicle is only used seasonally,
- military orders,
- a storage receipt, or
- other evidence the county tax assessor-collector accepts.
What this guide doesn't cover
The actual fine on a citation is set by the court, up to the $200 TxDMV mentions. Commercial vehicles have different rules.
