How much does it cost to transfer a car title in Wyoming?
The title is the document that proves who owns the car. In Wyoming it costs $15, a flat fee set by state law. You get it from the county clerk in the county where you live. Tax, plates and registration are handled by the county treasurer, so most buyers visit two offices.
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Title | $15 |
| Duplicate title | $15 |
| Lien (recording the lender's claim) | $20 |
| VIN inspection (cars from out of state) | $10 |
The VIN inspection is a check of the vehicle identification number, needed for any car last titled or registered in another state.
Worked example: $30,000 car, first year of service, Albany County
- State sales tax: 4% of $30,000 = $1,200.00
- Albany County sales tax: 2% of $30,000 = $600.00
- Title: $15.00
- State registration fee: $30.00
- County registration fee: 3% × 60% × $30,000 = $540.00
Total: $2,385.00.
The Wyoming calculator below starts from the same $2,385.00. Albany County's total tax rate is 6% since October 1, 2026. The tax is on the purchase price, and the county fee is on the factory price (the price when new). They match here only because both are $30,000. A lien adds $20, and a car from out of state adds the $10 VIN inspection.
How many days do you have to transfer a title in Wyoming?
| How you bought the car | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Private sale | 45 days |
| Wyoming dealer, with temporary permits | 60 days |
| Out-of-state dealer | 60 days |
| Title held by a bank or auctioneer and delivered later | 60 days |
The seller must sign the title over in front of a notary and give it to you when the car is delivered. Wyoming is one of the few states that requires this.
No title is issued until the tax is paid or the treasurer notes an exemption.
What are the late fees for a title transfer in Wyoming?
Wyoming has no late title fee and no late registration fee. The cost of being late is on the sales tax. If it isn't paid within 65 days of the sale (or of bringing the car into Wyoming):
- Interest: 1% a month on the unpaid tax, from day 65.
- Civil fee: $25 from day 65 through day 75.
- After day 75: the greater of $25 or 10% of the tax.
Wyoming sales tax on a car
Wyoming charges 4% state sales tax, plus county taxes that voters approve, capped at 3% in total. The rate is the one for the county where you live on the date of sale, not where you bought the car. The Department of Revenue's rate charts list every county.
- Who collects: never the dealer. For a car, dealer sale or private, the county treasurer collects the tax before the first Wyoming registration.
- Trade-ins: the trade-in value comes off the price only when the trade-in and the purchase happen in one transaction. Selling your old car separately later earns no credit.
- Bought out of state: use tax on the same terms, paid to the treasurer before the first registration.
Family sales and gifts
Since July 1, 2026, sales and gifts between immediate family are free of the tax. Immediate family means:
- Parent, child or spouse
- Sibling
- Stepparent, stepchild or stepsibling
- Grandparent or grandchild
The condition: the seller or giver must have paid sales or use tax when they got the car. Counties use a notarized Family Sales Tax Affidavit.
Gifts outside the family are taxed on the car's fair market value, unless you can prove the giver already paid tax on it (a tax receipt or the earlier registration).
Registration fees
Wyoming registration has two parts, both paid every year:
- State fee: $30 for a passenger car.
- County fee: 3% of the factory price times a share that drops each year, with a $5 minimum. The formula is the same in all 23 counties.
| Year of service | Share of factory price | County fee on a $30,000 car |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 60% | $540 |
| 2nd | 50% | $450 |
| 3rd | 40% | $360 |
| 4th | 30% | $270 |
| 5th | 20% | $180 |
| 6th and later | 15% | $135 |
So the example car renews for $480 in its second year ($30 + $450).
Plates
Wyoming plates belong to the owner, not the car. The seller keeps them and can move them to their next similar vehicle. The state's fee law has no plate transfer fee for passenger cars. Replacement plates are $8.
Electric and hybrid cars
- Electric car: $100 a year, cut from $200 on July 1, 2026.
- Plug-in hybrid: $50 a year.
- Regular hybrid: no fee.
New residents
- Deadline: register when you become a resident. The law sets no grace period in days.
- Working here as a nonresident: register right away, or buy a temporary worker permit for $50 a month, up to 180 days.
- Tax: none on a car you already owned and had registered in your old state.
- Fees: the $10 VIN inspection, the $15 title (plus $20 for a lien) and the yearly registration.
What documents do you need?
- The title signed over to you in front of a notary, with the seller's odometer statement.
- For a new car: the manufacturer's certificate of origin and the dealer's statement of the factory price.
- A VIN inspection if the car comes from another state.
- A bill of sale, if the clerk asks for one.
- For a family transfer: the county's Family Sales Tax Affidavit.
